Ostrava New Music Days 2017

I'm really pleased to again be part of Ostrava New Music Days, a festival and seminar that fundamentally changed my musical life back in 2001.

This instalment: solo, chamber and orchestral music by Lang, Mitchell, Rzewski, Sciarrino, Xenakis, Walshe and others.

Music with parentheses in New York

  • Roulette

I was  supposed to perform at the formidable Interpretations series in New York already last year, but due to the delayed visa the concert had to be postponed. This may prove to be a blessing in disguise: for the last few months I've been working on a new idea of a piece with the working title Music with parentheses. It is an attempt to articulate dreams, fantasies, visions and hopes.

Tulkinnanvaraista brings to the old capital a selection of historical and more recent experimental music. The philosophies of Marxist thinker Christopher Caudwell and King Solomon are presented in hyper-virtuosic works by Lachen- and Zimmermann. The recent works of Juho Laitinen reach out towards the hazy dreamlands that cannot be outlined by means of articulation.

Tulkinnanvaraista: Jane Rigler (USA) feat. Thomas Buckner (USA), Jone Takamäki and Juho Laitinen

  • Vapaan taiteen tila

Flutist, composer, and improviser Jane Rigler creates pieces that play with hidden languages, recall ancestral songs, incorporate playful game techniques and ask the performers to imagine and improvise. In this concert Jane will perform original works such as the calling (2013), which connects her concern for people, languages, environmental awareness, animals and nature using sounds she collects during her travels. She will also re-perform various pieces from her album, Rarefactions (Neuma, 2015) that juxtaposes dense, breathtaking agility on the instrument with subtle, intimate, practically inaudible resonances as they travel through the flute tube.

Baritone Thomas Buckner, our old friend, will perform Karen Power's Quack Moo Sigh, a recent work where the performer improvises with a recorded and processed version of himself.

Multi-instrumentalist Jone Takamäki and I will then join in for a group improvisation.

Egle Oddo: Ark of Seeds

"Ark of Seeds is an artwork prevalently dealing with questions related to nutrition, health and fair distribution of natural resources. The priority of the cross-disciplinary experimentation since 2007 has been to shelter natural plant seeds inside a sculpture. Gradually the artwork has matured into a collective performance: aerial acrobats, actors and musicians transfer the plant seeds from the cavity of the sculpture into the hands of the public. The project synthesizes contemporary art, an unprejudiced and gentle scientific touch with groundbreaking research in law. " – E.O.
